The Department of Aesthetics is formed by a group of five academics: Prof. Krystyna Wilkoszewska, Prof. Michał Ostrowicki/Sidey Myoo, Prof. Krzysztof Guczalski, Dr. Lilianna Bieszczad, and Dr. Jakub Petri. PhD Candidates also participate in the research activities of the Department.

The Department conducts research in the field of contemporary aesthetics, in particular pragmatist aesthetics, eco-aesthetics, the philosophy and aesthetics of digital media, the philosophy of art and music, performative aesthetics, and the aesthetics of urban spaces. The research is interdisciplinary and partly transcultural in its character.

The members of the Department have established the following institutions: John Dewey Research Center at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków (K. Wilkoszewska), which organizes conferences at both national and international levels, hosts visits of internationally recognized pragmatist philosophers and research stays of academics from Poland and abroad, and organizes sessions of Polish pragmatist philosophers; A Section of Somaesthetics (L. Bieszczad), operating within the John Dewey Research Center, which organizes theoretical and practical workshops in collaboration with other centers of somaesthetics in the world; Academia Electronica (M. Ostrowicki/Sidey Myoo), developing its activity online, in the 3-D graphic environment called Second Life, and involved in the research on new media, e-learning, and collaboration with other centers that promote the application of electronic media. Besides that, the members of the Department participate in the activities of the Polish Society of Aesthetics, both as members of its Board and by co-organizing conferences and congresses of aesthetics in Poland on an annual basis.

The activities of the Department members also include publishing academic journals. K. Guczalski is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Principia, M. Ostrowicki is a co-author and editor in an online journal of a new type, tilted Medialicia. Studia Multimedialne z Humanistyki, and L. Bieszczad has initiated the online journal Estetyka. Biuletyn, of which she is the Editor-in-Chief.
