Enlightenment and Freedom of Speech

The Department of the History of Philosophy and the Research Project Team of "The Enlightenment Ideas of the Freedom of Thought and Conscience, and Contemporary Secularism" invite to an international colloquium "Enlightenment and Freedom of Speech". The colloquium will be held on 19 and 20 May 2017 in the Institute of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Room 25 (Roman Ingarden lecture hall). Plenary speakers: Professor Ian Carter (University of Pavia, Italy), political philosopher and author of "A Measure of Freedom", and Professor Ulrich Lehner (Marquette University, USA), historian of ideas specialising in Catholic Enlightenment, author of "The Catholic Enlightenment: The Forgotten History of a Global Movement". The Section of Logical Rhetoric invites to a series of lectures by Professor Stefano Predelli (Nothingham University): 23 May 2017, 2:30 p.m., Room 25: "Names in Context" 24 May 2017, 5:30 p.m., Room 25: "Placeholder Names and Other Metalexical Issues" 25 May 2017, 5:30 p.m., Room 25: "Empty Words, Empty Names" Stefano Predelli is professor of philosophy at the University of Nottingham. His contribution has been primarily to the philosophy of language. Stefano Predelli's recent books include: "Proper Names, A Millian Perspective" (2017), "Meaning Without Truth" (2013) and "Contexts. Meaning, Truth, and the Use of Language" (2005). Students who participate in all three lectures can be granted 1 ECTS credit point.
